Jules
Stalk music supervisors
•••
Oh, bestie. I’m so glad you do this too. Rec League friends: this applies to so many things! Deep search to find the things that inspire your favorite creators. Don’t stop at “directors” or “musicians.” Look at music supes, concert production artists, choreographers, costume designers, museum curators. Figure out who makes that cool thing cool and then dig into them! (Just try to keep it from becoming parasocial)

Just try things
•••
My girl @Jules coming in with the sage advice. She forgot to mention her classic quote at the end of each of these experiences: “I always forget how much more I like myself when I remember to be brave.” Wise words for us all.

Hoarding all birthday cards & presents for the actual day
•••
There is something extra special about going to bed the night before my birthday with a little stack of birthday cards on the nightstand next to me. I love waking up the next morning and tearing through all those little envelopes of love. Really starts the day off right.

Ignore the Deep Link
•••
Conflicting advice, I know! But when on a deadline, the deep link must be ignored unless absolutely necessary. Be discerning and decide when the extra information is necessary to avoid information overload. Put on those horse blinders and ignore the lure of the blue text. More information is not always good (though it is most certain fun).

Follow the deep link
•••
If you are interested in learning new things, follow every deep link you can find. If there’s no deep link but you don’t know what something is, look it up! Is this a time suck? Yes, of course. But it also leads to some pretty great stuff.

Try Pairing: One of the Easiest Ways to Strengthen a Habit (Gretchen Rubin)
•••
Pairing as a form of habit formation is great. You take the thing you want to commit to and do it alongside a thing you love and do naturally. For example, I only allow myself to watch certain TV shows at the gym. If I’m not at the gym, I can’t watch it.

No ragrets

This joke lives beyond the movie that birthed it, evidenced by the fact that I have not seen said movie. I think this phrase at least once a week.

Making friends with neighborhood dogs
•••
Do I need to know my neighbors’ names in order to make weird small talk? No. Do I need to know their dogs’ names so that me and their dog can be besties? Without question.

Talk to people about their hobbies
•••
I mean, really ask people the nitty gritty of their hobby. Their passion is contagious even if the thing isn’t your thing. You learn so much about the person and how they think. Beats basic small talk any day of the week.

Movie Sequel Naming
•••
There are certain things that combine all of my interests and studio sequel naming is one of them. I have found that very few people have given this any thought. If you are a person who can immediately name an excellently (or terribly) named sequel when I bring this up in conversation, you are a person for me.

Buy small souvenirs
•••
I love small souvenirs that I can use for every day tasks — a bottle opener, a keychain, a sticker for my water bottle, a magnet for my fridge. These items make me smile each time I use them and take up almost zero suitcase space.

Create a school-like environment
•••
This is the best way I’ve found to adjust to a new environment quickly. Find a class where you will encounter the same people at a set rhythm so you don’t feel pressure to feel a connection immediately. Make it something fun that you’ve always wanted to learn!
