Jimmy the penguin’s big jump

A whale’s gotta eat but I love it for this penguin who jumped out of the water into this boat to escape some orcas. Way to go, little guy!!

Free Willy

This was the OG source of obsession for me. I’ve seen it probably 30 times and I still weep. I would love nothing more than to discuss the ethics of this film (see previous rec: The Good Whale) but the simple truth is, I would not know or care about preserving and saving these magnificent, amazing, terrifying, engaging creatures without this movie. So, not sure what that means. I guess…just watch it will ya?!

The Good Whale podcast

From NYT and “Serial” - a fascinating look into the activists behind Keiko’s release in the ‘90s. It seems simple to want what is best for the animal, but when experts vehemently disagree about what that actually means…it means that we shouldn’t put these animals in captivity in the first place.

Blackfish (2013)

Fantastic doc that I’ve watched multiple times. Does that cover image not just stop your heart in fear and awe? I have been obsessed with orcas since I was a small child - it was the Seaworld era. But no longer!!!! They may not have my money no thank you sir!!! Long live whales!!! I have other orca related recs if there’s interest…
