The God of the Woods

“"I didn’t get through a ton of books this year, but The God of the Woods stood out as a true “couldn’t put it down” mystery. I love a good whodunit, and this one delivers!" Valerie Quant [VALERIE'S FIVE]”

“This book kept me guessing. I really appreciated all the different characters perspectives and switching years from the current missing child to the previous one.”

“Definitely one of my favorites from last summer. Couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait to see it as a tv series (I think)”

“yes, it’s long, but it’s impossible to read without having something to say. bonus - it’s multiple POVs so you can discuss whose resonated with you most etc.”

“This book haunted me... hit all the notes of a page turner... unique characters, perfect balance of suspense and plot, a ghost story and family saga all in one. Hell, buy it for the cover art alone. So good.”

“Great summer read. Well paced mystery”

“Last book I read that stuck with me.”

“A mystery set on the grounds of a summer camp in 1975. When a rebellious teen is found missing from her bunk, the camp and the town is sent into a tizzy because this is a missing camper with prestige. A daughter of the town's wealthiest family, the Van Laar girl disappearance mirrors the disappearance of her own brother over a decade prior. What secrets does the town and the Van Laar family keep? Behold the many and take a ride in this wonderfully crafted story. Word on the street is there is an adaptation coming out soon. Look forward to it. Even though I was disappointed with the adaptation of Liz Moore's killer novel Long Bright River, I have high hopes with an adaptation of this story.”

“A great slow (but not too slow!) burn of a read. I wanted to binge it in a weekend, but didn't just so I could enjoy it longer.”

“The God of the Woods by Liz Moore is a literary thriller about a teenage girl, Barbara Van Laar, who disappears from a summer camp in the Adirondacks in 1975, echoing the disappearance of her older brother years earlier. The novel explores the secrets of the wealthy Van Laar family and the working-class community that serves them, weaving together multiple perspectives to create a layered mystery about class, privilege, and family trauma.”

“This book is everything!!! A little over half way done. The Layers, character building is phenomenal”

“A multi-generational story that bounces through perspectives, I liked this book far more than I anticipated. Yes, it's a thriller/mystery about a missing girl at summer camp, but the characters are rich and layered, and I was gripped right to the end.”

“Summer reading a year late”

“Perfect summer read.”

“This one was fantastic, and wasn't what I thought it would be. Twists and turns and details that make you flip back to previous pages saying, "wait a minute..."”

“I really loved this book Family history mysteries are some of my favorites. Drama that spans generations? Yes please. I am 36 but I will always love a spunky young I’m not like other kids character. I especially liked that this one took a vulnerable friend under her wing — now that is real life hero shit. We should all do more of that. I’m a real good guesser, I have been reading since I was very young, I come from a family of avid readers and we all love movies and television just as much. I can see a plot hole and a not so great twist from a mile away. Hell I can see a pretty fucking good twist from a mile away. The ending of this came out of no where in a good way. I felt like maybe I just didn’t have the right clues to get there and that’s great for someone who can too often guess the ending. I convinced a friend to read it and she loved it too.”
