CaitFirst to rec““Who was it that said that coincidence was just God’s way of remaining anonymous?” Donna Tart’s best book. Painful, winding and thoroughly researched. As per usual all the female characters are generally flimsy and mythical as Donna is definitely a guys girl who seems to view women as set pieces (unsurprising as she was a classmate and good friend of famous woman hater Brett Easton Ellis) However the goldfinch is still stand alone in its ambition and execution, and luckily its about a boy so he is full and complicated. It reads like an epic, kind of Greek in its themes of mortality, muses (see flimsy female characters) family and TREASURE!!!”
