Klara and the Sun

“A novel about AI and gene editing, about class and meritocracy, about service and labor, about love and loneliness, loss and prayer. Like other Ishiguro, it is warm, melancholic, and sinister.”

“it is difficult to top Never Let Me Go but this one comes damn close”

“pg. 303 rating 3.7/5 "mr. capaldi believed there was nothing special inside josie that couldn't be continued. he told mother he'd searched and searched and found nothing like that. but i believe now he was searching in the wrong place. there was something very special but it wasn't inside josie. it was inside those who loved her." (ishiguro, p. 302) initial (rough) thoughts: although at times i thought the pacing was a bit slow and stagnant, this line was just too beautifully written. even after finishing the book, i kept thinking about it and returning to this quote. it extends beyond the question of whether AFs (or artificial intelligence) can replicate a human being and makes me think about what makes us who we are and whether our identities truly belong to us alone. i tend to think of individuality as something internal, as though identity is something we possess independently of everyone else. but this quote challenges that assumption by suggesting that what makes someone irreplaceable isn't entirely contained within the individual. part of who we are exists outside of ourselves, in the people who know us, remember us, and love us. and i think that's such a beautiful but also unsettling way of understanding human existence. if we follow this idea, then no one person exists in quite the same way to everyone they encounter. each person carries a different understanding of who you are, shaped by their own experiences, emotions and relationships with you. none of these versions is incorrect or false but none can fully encompass you either. we are not simply who we understand ourselves to be but also who we have become in the lives of others. this also clashes with the idea of being irreplaceable. we often associate irreplaceability with exceptionalism, as though being special requires possessing something that nobody else has. we want to believe there is something inherently extraordinary about us that makes us deserving of love. but i think that we don't necessarily have to be extraordinary to be irreplaceable as someone else might share your personality traits, your interests, your appearance or even your memories. but they cannot occupy the exact same place you have occupied in another person's life. they cannot recreate the history of knowing you, the particular moments that shaped your relationship or the meaning your existence has accumulated over time. love becomes so important. love isn't simply the recognition of someone's inherent value. it is also a process through which value and meaning are created. we don't necessarily love people because they are objectively unlike anyone else. sometimes they become unlike anyone else precisely because we love them. there's also something so melancholic about this (lol). particularly when we consider memory, grief and the passage of time. when we lose someone, we aren't simply grieving the absence of an individual. we're also grieving a relationship that can never exist in the same way again. the shared history, the familiarity and even the version of ourselves that existed in relation to that person. someone who knew us at a particular point in our lives carries memories of who we once were, including parts of ourselves we may no longer recognize. there's another side to this that i find interesting. if our identities are partly constituted through other people's love and memories, what happens when those memories fade, relationships change or people stop loving us? does some part of who we are disappear with them? from my interpretations i don't think the quote (and the book) implies that our worth depends on being loved. because it would suggest that people who are isolated, forgotten or unloved somehow possess less individuality. rather, i think it as suggesting that our identities are relational without being reducible to our relationships. there is a difference between saying that other people help constitute who we are and saying that they determine our worth. and this distinction matters in a society that places enormous emphasis on individuality, independence, self-discovery and becoming our most authentic selves. YET so much of what makes us who we are emerges through our encounters with other people. our language, habits, values, insecurities, aspirations and even our understanding of ourselves are shaped through relationships. which makes me think that we are far less independent than we would like to believe (ha! ha! ha!). this also challenges the way we think as we tend to measure human value through productivity, intelligence, achievement or other qualities that can supposedly be evaluated and compared. as mr. capaldi's attempt to locate and reproduce josie's essence reflects a broader tendency to treat human beings as collections of identifiable characteristics. if everything about a person can be catalogued then perhaps everything about them can be replicated and replaced. but knowing everything about a person is not the same as knowing what it means to love them. and i think that's ultimately what makes this quote so touching to me. it suggests that there are dimensions of human existence that cannot be fully understood by looking at people on their own because their significance emerges through the relationships they form with the world around them.”

“A gorgeously simple novel told entirely from the perspective of an “Artificial Friend” who seeks to understand the world of her human child companion. “Sometimes,’ she said, ‘at special moments like that, people feel a pain alongside their happiness. I’m glad you watch everything so carefully, Klara.””

“Unforgettable story of love, tenderness, and vulnerability in the age of AI”

“I still think about this book. It’s about a home robot and her yearning for love.”
