“Somewhere I didn't think to visit, but am really glad we did is Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park (日光田母沢御用邸記念公園). The grounds feels like the ultimate boss level of Japanese gardens, but I guess that's what it literally is since it was built for a crown prince.
Originally built in 1899 for the recuperation of Crown Prince Yoshihito (later Emperor Taishō), who was sent to Nikkō's mountain air for his health. The building was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2003 and selected as one of the 100 Best Historical Parks of Japan in 2007. There were more rooms than I could count (even when looking at the floor map, jk I just researched and there are 106 rooms...) and is the largest surviving Meiji and Taishō imperial villa in Japan.
