IKEA’s genius cat scratching mat

This fills a true unmet need: it readily turns already-existing furniture — in my case, usually a table leg — into a cat scratching post. And it’s a well-loved scratching post at that, in my household. Plus, these things are so affordable that I’ve gone ahead and stockpiled a few, just in case one day IKEA discontinues them.

These are so good, you don’t even need to understand them. Literally. I first got one as a little fun inspo when I adopted my cat — so many American and Western pet accoutrements are deeply, heinously ugly — but have since developed a bit of a bad habit whenever I spot an intriguing issue in a Kinokuniya bookstore. My absolute faves are the kitchen design ones.

Pidan expandable backpack carrier

Most importantly by far, my cat adores this - it’s one of her favorite places to hang out, period. She feels safe and comfy, and once you’re a cat person you know that that is a HIGH bar for carriers. This Chewy bed is a perfect fit inside, and adds a ton of comfort. I also love that it’s both a backpack style (much easier for schlepping) and expandable. You can even fit a small travel-size litter box inside the expanded side. All that said, the carrier isn’t a *perfect* design - but I followed the lead of an Amazon reviewer who suggests adding a board to the inside of the “floor” to stabilize it and not sag under the cat’s weight, and it’s made a massive difference. Feel free to message if you’d like more deets about how I did that. It also isn’t technically TSA-approved, though I have gone on over a dozen flights (comfortably! My girl likes to travel, funnily enough) and never had an issue. All in all, I truly recommend it, albeit with these caveats.

Churu Nourish

I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with that! My cat got FIP when she was an 8mo kitten (diagnosed just 10 days after the FDA approved prescribing the antiviral cure! I could do, and have considered making, a whole post or even series about FIP on Rec League, but it is just so incredibly niche - if anyone happens to find this who’s dealing with that, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly). She not only survived but is straight up thriving, two years on, but when you’re going through low appetite it can be so difficult to make sure they’re eating when they have little to no interest. Churu Nourish, as well as Gerber chicken/turkey/ham and Tastefuls Purées, were an absolute lifesaver for us (literally!). These are like 12 cal each to regular Churu’s 7 I believe. If the goal really is to gain rather than just maintain weight, just feed as many as they’ll eat per sitting; get those calories in however you can. You’ll worry about nutritionally balanced meals once weight’s stabilized.

My cat — like most, a creature of habit — religiously spends her mornings on this, which is in a north-facing window, then transitions to sunnier climes later in the day. It also happens to be the chicest cat furniture I’ve ever seen.
