Go to performances at small arts organizations
•••
I used to work for San Francisco Ballet and now I work for the small but mighty Diablo Ballet. Often dancers come to us because they want an opportunity for a bigger role than they could get at a larger org. We have dancers from all over the world. Point being artists who perform for smaller companies are so passionate about their craft. They just want to dance/act/sing/play their instrument whether they’re at a big name company or not. There are so many unbelievably talented people out there and they can’t all work for world renowned companies. Tickets will likely be more affordable too.

Maria Berrio
•••
Happened upon one of Berrio’s works at NYPL and then fell down a rabbit hole and fell in love with her work. She “paints” with Japanese papers and creates visually stunning collages that are often (but not always) political.

Suffs
•••
I don’t even like musicals and this play now ranks as my favorite theatrical performance I’ve ever seen. Timely, timeless, inspiring, and moving. It chronicles the suffrage movement in a way that made uncontrollable tears run down my face (along with so many other people in the audience).

Luisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark
•••
You can ride your bike up the coast here from Copenhagen! (You start by bringing your bike on a short train ride) The museum is one of my favorites in the world not just because of the superb collection but also because of the architecture and sculpture garden. A must see if you’re visiting Copenhagen.

Momoca’s paper plants and flowers
•••
I love everything Momoca makes but her paper flowers are particularly beautiful. They’ve been used to decorate Chez Panisse, and Day of the Dead alters at my favorite Mexican restaurant in Oakland, Bombera. Delicately lovely and ephemeral. She also offers workshops on how to make them.
