Surf camp in your twenties

I went to Algarve Surf Camp in Portugal in 2023, age 27, and it was one of the highlights of my twenties. Days spent in the waves, nights spent socializing and flirting and partying. My first time ever surfing, the camp was designed for beginners and intermediates! Very budget-friendly compared to similar experiences. Truly so special and recommend to anyone in their twenties, especially single solo travelers. (I’m on the lookout for another surf camp to go to in the coming years that’s a little older-skewing now!)

Ok so I'm pretty sure most people do this instinctively or whatever - I was not one of them and I hope this finds the right person. I've never been able to swim without holding my nose under water. I've since learned that there is actually a muscle that swimmers use to keep water out. Basically exhale a bit and swallow at the same time, hold the position of your tongue at the start of the swallow. If you are doing it right you physically will not be able to inhale through your nose until you release the position. Apparently humming and making a "k" sound also puts you in the right position.

I have this one from Faro saved. I like that it has extra padding and lots of pockets, so I can pack my towels and wet suit all in one place. It also seems to fold down into a pretty compact size that I could tuck away in my closet or car when I’m not using it. It can also be adjusted for shorter boards, and I’m hoping to size down to something smaller eventually.

Aside from that, I’ve completely changed my outlook on swimwear. String bikinis are for a past life. This is probably long overdue, but I’m all about security and coverage now. Of course, I’ve searched our own site and saved tons of suits, especially from the swim-romper, tankini, and swim-shorts roundups. Here were a couple that caught my eye. I’m also still trying to figure out what I’m most comfortable surfing in in cold California waters. My spring suit from Rip Curl has been great so far, but I’m worried that once the temps rise or the inevitable heat wave comes, I’ll want something a little thinner. I have these not-too-thick rash guards and suits saved just in case.
