I’m having the time of my life hiking in slovakia and it’s crazy that so many folks have no clue how gorgeous it is here! And so much cheaper than the alps! Took this pic yesterday on a spectacular day hike!
did it once and made 4 friends & 1 enemy
A lovely little mountain with a great lookout at the top, near Brevard. We had a great hike here a few years back
I am sure you’ve already heard great things, so I will just double down and say Tents is a quick hike but a worthwhile adventure through cone-shaped rock formations (Consider grabbing lunch at Rancho De Chimayo on the way!)
one of socal’s most rewarding hikes, not to be approached casually. i last went alone in september, took a wrong turn, and turned what should have been an eight-mile hike into fourteen. i ended up with two fully purple big toes that still haven’t fully healed.
I finally got myself a pair of Merrell Moab 3s after my 3-month old conventional sneakers developed holes in the toe box. I’m done with fashion sneakers! I feel strong in my Waterproof Moabs. Nature nana activated.
A hidden gem from its usually sparse visitors, to its quaint turtle pond, to its slightly ominous, crumbling Spanish-style house on the premises that was built by the (cursed) Doheny family in 1930s as a summer retreat. So sad that the LA Parks system has been so abysmally underfunded that they had to close the Nature Education Center that I so loved as a kid (you can still glimpse deflated kayaks and a taxidermied mountain lion through the dusty windows).
Seconding this rec for the people who want nature and waterfalls on their hikes.
my favorite swimming spot, near camden.
best hike / ocean views / shaded / good workout
A great, useful running and biking trail. Takes you all the way from community park to umstead park and campus, with stops along the way for Caffe Driade, Root Cellar, Flyleaf Books, etc. The creek is fun for kids, too.
My favorite hike in all of Colorado. Covered by trees, being a riverside companion; it’s and out-and-back you won’t mind. Multiple payoff points along with way. Just be prepared to get a touch wet :-)
i love this hike but mostly have a fantasy of spending a weekend at the pelican inn.
Best hike on the North Shore. Beautiful river views, waterfalls, old growth forest. Park on 61 at the entrance to the state park, hike on the west side of the river up to the SHT trailhead entrance at County Rd 45, then back on the east side of the river. Pack a lunch.
Absolute cinema of a hike. 14 miles through a giant creek bed full of delightful little clambers into the hills. Then you chase the water into deep and magical canyons where it has pummeled giant swimming holes out of solid stone. The water is cold and pure and so alive. The last punch bowl has a natural water slide. Highly recommend.
A good running or walking loop. Beautiful in all seasons.
Ostensibly for running, but I want them for tennis + hiking.
Yosemite this Yosemite that. Yeah it’s pretty but it’s like god damned Disneyland up there. Inyo is the lower part of the eastern sierras and has some of the most spectacular vistas, campsites, and glacial lakes I’ve ever dipped my dang hogs into. Perfect for a mid July camping trip. You can get that gorgeous California sunshine by day and that crisp mountain air by night. Electric spot. Everyone should go.
Featured in The Wonderlyst #121 With routes inspired by Hercules and Hermes, the 1,000-plus-mile Peloponnese Trails network is scheduled to launch in June in Greece. Happy Trails To You!
This hike is literally 1mi. But as the website says it’s a bang for your buck! Completely uphill the entire time. Great views. Fast. In retrospect I can’t believe how much time it took my family of 6 to just get out of the house to hike… 1 mile. This was the only hike we could ever accomplish as a collective unit.
Swimming here as a child was such an incredible experience--the hike through the woods and stream, the waterfall, the rock steps into the side to climb up to the top and J U M P into the deep pool at the base of the falls. This is where they filmed the waterfall scene in Tuck Everlasting (see link) and thinking about the notion of living for forever (and choosing not to) is something I always thought about here. It was meaningful to me as a child that of all the places that Jesse could be--and he had a lifetime--it was here that resonated with him so much. It is truly a magical, otherworldly place. A place out of time.
Once you know the trail, what is the weather going to actually do up there? Most trail apps give you a generic forecast for the nearest town. TrekWeather gives you point forecasts at the trail's elevation and coordinates, multiple weather models, and ensemble spread so you know how confident the forecast is. Use AllTrails to pick the hike. Use TrekWeather to know if you should go.
it's so simple, but it's the best. walks! anywhere, anytime, any weather. there's no reason not to go for a walk. ramp it up and make it a hike. slow it down, and go for a stroll. clear the mind, settle the soul, good for digestion, and moves the body in a gentle way. alone or with others. one of my absolute favorites.
Listen Linda - these socks are a sweaty gals DREAM COME TRUE. I hiked for 5 days in Norway with these bad boys on my feet. One of those hikes was across the Bessegan ridge which meant I was extra sweaty due to an intense fear of heights. Breathable. Functional. Cute. Chic. What more could you want in the outdoors?
