shaking your body

My somatic practitioner taught me this one and it is, thus far, thee most effective way to get myself out of a funk. You’re literally dislodging stuck energy! Find a quiet private space and just flail about until u feel a little bit better! Runner up is taking the ferry for a joyride if you have one accessible to you. I love the ferry, it always makes me feel like a girl who is going to be okay.

Wicker Park Neighborhood Guide
•••
I read a Substack called The Seasonalist that focuses on “joyful anticipation”, so to get out of a rut I try to build it into my life in different ways. One of the easiest is to pick a place I regularly pass on my commute that catches my eye, and make a real plan to stop and actually go in and see it in person. Maybe it’s a bar or restaurant that I make a plan to try with a friend or family member, or it’s a shop that I make time to go into and browse, or it could even be a park that I bring a book to one evening. The point is just to a. break up the same old same old and b. to go from wondering what a place is like to actually experiencing it. It’s a way to keep things from getting stale! (Also, ignore the photo & link, I just posted those for RL tax since it’s a neighborhood I pass through on my own commute!)

The Worst Idea of All Time Podcast (Season One)
•••
i found the repetitive nature of this podcast very soothing when i was going through a depressive episode. yes the repetition in question was “two guys watch the same dogshit adam sandler movie over and over again” but it was helpful nonetheless.

Help I’m Alive (Metric)
•••
When I need to kool-aid man myself out of a depression I find music really helpful, especially music that reminds me what it feels like to be alive. My ultimate unfreezing song. Also talking to strangers. Like little positive interactions.

Sit on the floor in front of a mirror. Soundtrack is your favorite ethereal raw singeress (mine is Kate Bush or Tori Amos or Florence) and gaze into your own eyes, trace your body lovingly and start to slowly move your body and as you awaken allow yourself to get feral with it. Get into your body, don’t think. Turn yourself on. Keep going (Idk what this link is. But only you know how to do this!)
