The Harbinger (2022): I don't know if I can call this my favorite scary movie, but I can tell you it's one of the most terrifying ones I've ever seen and I will never, ever forget it. 2022 was...a messed-up year, as a New Yorker who stayed in the city through lockdown, to watch a horror movie about the city during lockdown. It's about nightmares and forgetting as erasure and - it is a very difficult movie to watch and also a thundering, excellent example of horror exploring things we don't have words to talk in other ways.

Session 9: I saw this movie as a physical, from-the-store rental (just to properly date things) and it has been one of my most-recommended scary movies ever since. An incredible blend of yikes location, yikes situations and a well-cultivated deep unease. I don’t see it hyped enough!

The Evil Dead (1981) 🪓: My favorite horror movie. The prototypical cabin in the woods film that gets exponentially bonkers. Closely followed by the much more fun Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Tons of great practical effects and gore. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell forever.

Audition: It’s so freaky and smart. Found this in college after watching Bravo 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

Amu Killada · Answer

Gonjiam Haunted Asylum: This is one of the scariest movies I’ve watched. The first few minutes feel like you’re watching an entirely different movie compared to what comes next. You’ll spend the whole time thinking, “Surely it can’t get worse than this,” only for things to somehow get even worse than you imagined.

The characters aren’t necessarily that likable, but you’ll still find yourself desperately rooting for them to escape the horrors they’re facing. The sound design is also perfect—it builds tension without overdoing it or relying on cheap tricks.

And the first-person POV is incredibly well done. This is exactly how you make a horror movie using that format.

Watch it at your own risk.

Amu Killada · Answer

Exhuma: Exhuma is not your typical horror movie. It weaves together ancient Korean shamanism, Korea’s colonial history, and Japan into one deeply layered story. Once you watch it, you’ll find yourself going down rabbit holes trying to understand every symbol, detail, and piece of dialogue. And then you’ll want to watch it a second time—because once you understand what everything means, you realize just how much you missed the first time.
