The Harbinger (2022)
•••
I don't know if I can call this my favorite scary movie, but I can tell you it's one of the most terrifying ones I've ever seen and I will never, ever forget it. 2022 was...a messed-up year, as a New Yorker who stayed in the city through lockdown, to watch a horror movie about the city during lockdown. It's about nightmares and forgetting as erasure and - it is a very difficult movie to watch and also a thundering, excellent example of horror exploring things we don't have words to talk in other ways.

It's always good; this year it's essential. (Record number of entrants, too.)

Claudia Keep

She has a way of painting light on water that makes me feel the way I feel when I swim. The gallery repping her here in NYC regularly sells prints and postcard sets!

Hieronymus Bosch Bird with Letter Figurine

This is some god-tier "know your audience" stuff, but if you've got the right kind of Intense Lady on your hands, no gift lands better than a little Garden of Earthly Delights guy. I've been giving my mom (art history major, brags about her pain threshold) these for years and the only present she's ever been more excited about was a smoked blue cheese sampler.

Miss Sherlock
•••
Jeremy Brett was my favorite Sherlock for most of my life, AND THEN: Yuko Takeuchi, instantly iconic. I watched this entire series on a flight to India and my wardrobe has never been the same. Wato-san? Also perfect. The antagonist reveal? SIMILARLY FLAWLESS.

The Baxter house (Poor Things, 2023)
•••
A little Bosch, a little Schiaparelli, a little H.R. Giger; it's Alasdair Gray's novel (which is a sibling of but distinct from Yorgos Lanthimos's movie in key secret ways I won't spoil, and a delight in its own right, GO READ IT) plus Shona Heath and James Price's brilliance. This is what I always want steampunk to be and it never is, quite - an historic take on the future that yes-ands itself at every turn and then turns inside out and does it again, the love child of an artificial cuttlefish and a Rube Goldberg machine. How is this a ship and a wunderkammer and a fetish club and an operating theater all at once?!

Indulging in Some Freaky, Seldom-Staged Shakespeare
•••
Did you know Joan of Arc rolls up in Shakespeare's first play? In the production of HENRY VI (PART I) I just saw - the first installment in a trilogy described by a fellow enthusiast as "heavy sledding" - she rolls up wielding curved daggers. I am also here for the Big Tragedies and weep my face off for absolutely every version of THE TEMPEST - okay, fine, I weep my face off at almost all Shakespeare - but after you've committed to seeing all 38 plays at some point in your life and you start going for the D-sides, you come back to the 'hits' and are like, "why is no one baking children in pies in this one?" It's flavor country, is what I'm saying, and if you can go see NAATCO's all-Asian cast doing H6, you should, It's a banger. A long, slow one, like a drum announcing your doom.

"Dont be afraid of the clocks, they are our time, the time has been so generous to us. We imprinted time with the sweet taste of victory. We conquered fate by meeting at a certain TIME in a certain space. We are a product of the time, therefore we give back credit were it is due: time. We are synchronized, now and forever. I love you."

Snail Shelf / Penny, Miles Lawton Gracey
•••
He's made a dozen so far; can you imagine the perfect happiness of having 12 snails squoodging up your wall?! He's also made a gorgeous table with little mother-of-pearl-lined niches in the back. A+ eye candy if your eye's sweet tooth is a little rotten.

Grace Jones
•••
Her memoir (I’ll Never Write My Memoirs) is already Rec League; GJ will be, like, halfway through the story of being Andy Warhol’s date to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s wedding and then spin off into where in various world capitals one should buy 1,000-piece Ravensburger puzzles (no substitutes will do; in Paris it’s Galeries Lafayette, btw). She’s been carried into her own birthday party in a coffin. When I saw her perform last summer she took off her pants and hula hooped through “Slave to the Rhythm.” She is this universe’s equivalent of the Bene Gesserit Voice and I AM DEEPLY INVESTED IN HER RECS.

CINDY AND REI KAWAKUBO, SITTIN IN A TREE (1994) This isn't directly related to how I'm going to wear a Pokémon trucker jacket over some thrifted Balenciaga the next time I go to the opera but I'm going to pretend it is.

Long ago when the internets were more fun, you could send Michel Gondry twenty bucks and a photo and he’d draw you. He eventually sent me this.

Glo Coalson's Raku Pigeons
•••
Colson created flocks of these iridescent-clay beauties in the '80s and '90s; I found one in a Housing Works auction here in New York this spring and she is the most beautiful creature in my apartment (don't tell my cats). I daydream about taking one of Glo's sculpture classes in Dallas.
