Hotel Villa Agape: A 15th c. former duchess’s villa turned elegant agriturismo that overlooks all of Florence, tucked away in the Tuscan hills. Florence is overrun by tourists. This is a great escape.

Hôtel du Couvent, Nice: The entire hotel is spectacular (literally carved out of the stone walls of a former convent, perched on the hill overlooking all of Nice and the French Riviera). But the subterranean Roman baths are the cherry on top, especially if you find yourself stuck inside during a rare Mediterranean downpour!

Kinloch Lodge (Isle of Skye): Foraging expeditions! 17th-century architecture! Mysterious fires at dusk! Fog on Loch na Dal! Snakeskins hidden in the roadside moss! I felt like a consulting detective for the whole stay, one who’d slipped into another universe’s story through the spine of an old library book. Bloody fantastic.

Hotel Simple Patagonia: Favorite hotel, hands down. Worth traveling to the end of the world for. Its location at the end of the world helps too. Perfect stop pre- and post-W Trail trek (or other Patagonia explorations).

Hoshinoya Kyoto: This ryokan in Arashiyama, Kyoto. I would have stayed a lifetime for the nature and water surround sounds, the boat ride to and from the property, and the simple privacy of the location.

Jan Luyken Amsterdam: A gorgeous boutique hotel in the museum district of Amsterdam. The neighborhood is quiet and residential, and right by the light rail. The included breakfast each morning was a dream… fresh bread and pastries, jams, fruit, meats and cheeses, espresso, tea… and then snacks in the afternoon including lots of Danish and Swedish candy. They also had a free bar stocked with spirits, wine, beer, soda, water, and juices. The entire place is gorgeously designed and extremely comfortable.

Eastside: Staying here right now and would live here forever if they let me! Luxurious, minimalist cottages with heavenly bedding, gorgeous bathrooms, a Finnish sauna and cold plunge, cozy sheepskins draped across seating, hiking paths through the heather-covered Pentland hills, and absolutely breathtaking views, all on a working sheep farm (lambing season!!) 10 miles from Edinburgh with the most lovely and gracious hosts who are committed to sustainably rewilding the land. TILE 19 - Caldas da Rainha, Portugal: …Words simply can’t describe the curation of the rooms. This was a vintage wardrobe display in which the items shown were hand crafted and made of tile. Yes, the shoes, the bag, the jewelry, all made of tile. Tile made objects adorned each room with such style and surprise, I simply couldn’t stop gawking at everything. As a dude, who likes a great hotel but doesn’t appreciate the artistry of tile or the beauty of handbags, I was simply amazed. The entry way is something special and the room itself is beyond incredible. Upon walking thru the front door there’s breathtaking art, everywhere. Okay, I’ll stop… just Google it.

les sources de cheverny: quiet and peaceful and a bike ride away from the valley’s many fancy chateaus!! incredible spa experience. walking around here felt so luxurious let alone the rooms and meals and atmosphere, all soooo romantic and full of light! not a lot of Americans on property when we visited so we felt cool like we found a hidden gem 😅

The villas are epic, massive and extremely well appointed (sound systems, different lighting schemes, soaking tubs, views upon views, a sectional that could SLEEP at least three). Nebesa: Nebesa in Kobarid, Slovenia. They’re the most amazing chalets that overlook the Soča Valley and the Julian Alps. They have a larder with local cheese, cured meats, jams, wines, etc that you can go in and grab at any time to take back to your room, and a sauna with a view of the valley. It’s close to Slovenian wine country, hiking, and the 3 michelin starred Hiša Franko.

Hotel Drisco San Francisco: I’m in sf a lot and this is usually where I stay. Hard to explain EXACTLY what makes it so amazing but it’s some combo of creaky staircases, city views, cozy rooms, quiet street, elaborate breakfast, and a nightly wine reception (with GOOD wines, thx sf!) that can be dinner in a pinch

Das Stue hotel in Berlin: It is expensive but it’s in the top 3 hotels I’ve stayed in. So tasteful, so relaxing, a wonderful retreat in the tiergarten and you can walk to the beergarden on the pond across the street! (why did I just switch from the German to American spelling? nobody knows)

Blackberry Mountain: Nestled in the Great Smoky mountains and the most luxurious experience I’ve ever had. Beautiful private homes or cottages to stay in, some of the best food I’ve ever, ever had, and delightful activities. Went for a big family reunion a few years back and I would highly recommend going with a group. Very expensive but very worth it.

Winter Palace Hotel: It's a tie between this one and Mena House in Cairo... both are so old-world and gracious, I could not get enough of both hotels... I was here for a week when I was eighteen and I was just knocked for six with how magnificent everything was. The people-watching from the cornice, the history, the pool, the bedrooms... whoa.

RAAS Jodhpur: A fortress made of earth in the blue city. The space feels both contemporary and ancient. There’s a beautiful interior courtyard where the morning prayer reverberates.

Outside of my budget but I’m grateful that I was able to tag along once. If you go to Jodhpur and want a luxurious but relaxed experience, this is the place.
