I did not truly appreciate this place until I left Pgh. Three James Turrell installations, two Yayoi Kusama rooms, the temporary exhibits are always good. Plus it's in a fan-favorite neighborhood with lovely outdoor space and sneaky art pieces scattered nearby. Pictured is Sarah Oppenheimer's 610-3356, a "wormhole" from a fourth-floor gallery out through a third-floor window.

Will Adler captured these portraits by using a Cheeto to get the birds to hold still. Perfection. I saw this work as part of a group show in 2024 at Indoek in Ventura, CA. You can still view one high up on the wall at Singing Sun on Main Street. These photos are quite arresting in person, and so much better for knowing they are images of Cheeto lust ❤️🔥

I discovered Sarah Sze at the 1999 Carnegie International and spent hours marveling at her installation. For me, almost less about the concept than the time, patience, and craft required to build out the room-size world she creates in each piece.

The first time I visited the Rothko room at the Tate Modern was a transformative experience. So immersive and powerful, looking at the paintings felt like melting into them. From the Tate website:‘This kind of design may look simple,’ Rothko remarked about his paintings, ‘but it usually takes me many hours to get the proportions and colours just right. Everything has to lock together. I guess I am pretty much a plumber at heart.’
