Bob Dylan: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 5: Live 1975 - The Rolling Thunder Revue
•••
One of the best vocal performances from Bob Dylan, and perhaps the most lively he's ever sounded. These recordings were taken from live performances on his 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Featuring reworked arrangements for some of his most popular songs, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol, Hurricane, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall are some highlights for me. The opener, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You features an especially strong performance from Dylan. Check it out

A completely A Cappella cover of Dark Side of the Moon. Yup, every sound on this album is made with the voice. It’s super cool what they do to emulate some of the weirder sounds on the album haha, I kinda wish more albums were given this treatment, it’s really cool to listen to

The Life Aquatic - Studio Sessions featuring Seu Jorge
•••
This has to be one of my favorite listening experiences as a fan of David Bowie and classical guitar. Seu Jorge effortlessly blends some of early-Bowie's best songs with Brazilian guitar sounds. I believe this album contributed to the soundtrack of the Wes Anderson film with the same name, but I haven't seen the movie myself. Speaking on the album, Bowie himself said, “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with," and I couldn't put it better myself. This album really makes me wish Bowie had gone headfirst into the jazz and bossa nova sounds this album showcases. It's just such a good vibe.

Philip Glass: Symphony No. 1 "Low"
•••
Who doesn't love Phillip Glass? I've been listening to him for a while (Glassworks is amazing). If you're unfamiliar, you might recognize him from the soundtracks of Candyman and The Truman Show, both of which are incredible. I can't believe it was only a few weeks ago that I discovered his Symphonies. Turns out he adapted David Bowie's entire Berlin Trilogy for orchestra, but his Low adaptation is my favorite. Glass doesn't just take Bowie's melodies and notate them for violin. He takes the album's musical ideas and interprets them as his own, weaving them together to create a wholly new piece of music. It is incredibly interesting to see how one great musician interprets another great musician's music. If you are a Phillip Glass, a Bowie fan, or just looking for something to study to, you'll surely enjoy this one.

The Times They Are A-Changin' (Arr. Adam Podd)
•••
I had the pleasure of singing this piece in a community choir in High School. Bob Dylan's words have never sounded as good as they have in Adam Podd's arrangement of his classic. This is an absolutely ethereal arrangement; it is beautiful from front to back, and has these mountains and valleys that are just perfect. I think this arrangement adds more meaning to the lyrics. Including these emotional swells forces the listener not just to listen to the lyrics, but truly hear and digest them. It's an incredible way to experience Boby Dylan's music and one of my favorite choral arrangements. If you want life to slow down for a few minutes (something that seems harder and harder every day), take the time out of your day to listen to this track. It hits harder today than it perhaps ever has. Just amazing.

Ragtime
•••
If you have never listened to/watched this incredible musical, do yourself a favor and give this one a listen. The story is set in early 1900s America and follows three families: An upper-class White family, Jewish immigrants from Europe (filmmaker Tateh and his daughter), and a Black couple from Harlem (pianist Coalhouse Walker and his partner Sarah). During the show, these characters' lives intertwine in hopeful, tragic, and powerful ways. It's a musical whose themes are just as relevant today as they were when it premiered in 1996. The music of this show is sweeping and beautiful, perfectly blending traditional musical theatre with ragtime and marching band styles. The arrangements and instrumentation make it one of the most sonically distinctive musicals, and I love the style they crafted. And of course, the performances are all spot on. Don't get me wrong: I love the performances from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, and Lea Michelle, but the performers from the 2025 album are just spectacular. Cassie Levy, Brandon Uranowitz, and Nichelle Lewis really shine, but let's be honest, the best performance on this album is easily Joshua Henry. If you have never had the pleasure of Joshua Henry gracing your ears, you need to seek out a recording of this man’s voice. I don’t think he is the best singer on broadway right now. He shines through the album, but especially on New Music, Coalhouse’s Soliloquy, and of course, Make Them Hear You (he is also phenomenal in the broadway revival cast recording of Carousel). I would talk about my other favorite songs but I would have to list like half the album, just listen to it, it’s amazing

Yebba is a generational talent and probably the best vocalist of the current generation. (If you want to listen to the kind of vocal heights she reaches, check out her single "My Mind") If you haven't listened to this album yet, do yourself a favor and give it a listen. Her artistry and musicality are unparalleled by almost every other person currently making music. The biggest standout on this album, for me, is Paranoia Purple, which is a dedication to Yebba's late mother. It is beautiful and heartbreaking. A few other standouts from this album are October Sky, Louie Bag, and Boomerang. She is also dropping her second album in a few weeks (which I am unvelivably hyped for).

Blackstar
•••
A haunting and beautiful album, Blackstar offers a powerful retrospective on one of the most legendary lives and careers we have ever seen. David Bowie released his last album on his 69th birthday, and he would lose his battle with Liver cancer just a few days later. Blackstar, perhaps Bowie's most musically adventurous album, seamlessly blends jazz, rock, and even hip-hop influences (notably Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly) into a tight, 40-minute package, packed with life and introspection. The fact that Bowie was still innovating and creating groundbreaking art this late into his career is remarkable. This should absolutely be considered among the best albums of Bowie's career and the 2010s. Dollar Days, to me, is the best song on the album, but Lazarus and the title track are also amazing. The music videos for "Blackstar" and "Lazarus" are incredibly moving; the connections to Major Tom offer a heartbreaking bookend to Bowie's career. If you haven't yet, please reserve the next 15 minutes of your life for watching these two music videos. Instead of fearing death, Bowie looked death right in the eyes and used it as an inspiration for one of the best collections of art ever created.

Turnstiles
•••
Pretty hard to believe there's no Billy Joel on here. Turnstiles has got to be one of, if not his best. It's certainly my favorite (though The Stranger offers some strong competition). This is his first truly great album, and it kicked off one of the best album stretches in musical history. Billy Joel was putting out nothing but bangers between 1976 and 1983 (including the highly overlooked The Nylon Curtain). Some highlights of this include Summer Highland Falls, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, New York State of Mind, and Prelude/Angry Young Man. Great for someone who wants to get into Billy Joel as well. Check it out!

The Disintegration Loops
•••
The Disintegration Loops, created by William Basinski, are a collection of six distinct pieces of music. To make each one, Basinski started with an intact tape recording of the piece, then he fed it through a tape machine, which re-recorded the tape. He did this repeatedly, and as the tape began to disintegrate, the recording would fall apart aurally. He does this for 6 tapes, which were released across 4 volumes. These are very interesting listens, as these beautiful arabesques emerge and disappear as the tape falls apart, eventually fading into a low, droning note as the tape disintegrates completely. Listening to this work really makes you reflect on your own life as you hear it slowly falling apart into these beautiful colors, then into nothing. It is a worthwhile listen, in my opinion. They were recorded in August and September 2001, with the final recording session coincidentally on the morning of September 11th. The work's correlation to that event does not go unnoticed, and knowing this context certainly puts the music in a different context. The album covers from this collection are pictures of the view outside of Basinski's apartment as the evening of September 11th progressed. This is definitely a worthy listen for anyone into the more atmospheric and experimental side of music.

One of the most beautiful choral-orchestral pieces in existence. Jake Runestad is a musical genius and this piece is proof enough. The Hope of Loving suite near the end of the piece is an incredible 15 minutes of music: My Soul Is A Candle is definitely a highlight. This is also peak study music.

Animals
•••
Hard to believe I haven't put a Pink Floyd album on here yet, and I thought this one should be the first. From beginning to end, Animals remains aurally interesting and thematically strong. 95% of this album consists three songs (with a short intro song and outro song). These three songs (pigs, dogs, and sheep) are loosely adapted form George Orwell's Animal Farm. Pigs symbolizes the corrupt, ruthless leaders who care only for the interests of themselves and their donors. Dogs represent the ruthless and competitive business class, who would betray their friends to get ahead. Sheep represent the people: They are passive and lack critical thinking. Overall, the album is a spells out a harsh critique of mid 1970s British society. The album starts and ends with two versions of the same song: Pigs on the Wing parts 1 and 2. These songs offer a more hopeful outlook on society, stressing that people can find meaning and safety from the oppressive world through their personal relationships. Musically, this album is absolutely incredible. My favorite track is definitely Dogs, the sweeping vocals are amazing and David Gilmour's guitar solos are a highlight. The beautiful guitar harmony that comes in his second solo (at 3:40) is one of my favorite moments on the track. Absolutely a gateway drug for anyone looking to get in to Pink Floyd.

A Moon Shaped Pool
•••
One of the most underrated Radiohead albums, their most recent release is absolutely filled with beautiful and experimental music. All the members of Radiohead are immensely talented musicians, and that fact is never clearer than it is on this album. Glass Eyes has one of the most beautiful piano passages I have ever heard in its introduction. The closer, True Love Waits has to be one of the most beautiful Radiohead songs ever, both lyrically and musically. The frantic synths and strings and sweeping vocals in Burn the Witch perfectly sets the tone for this album. This album should be considered as a top-tier Radiohead album along with OK Computer and Amnesia.

Come Away With Me
•••
Norah Jones's Come Away With Me is one of the best debut albums in the history of music. This album is absolutely filled with jazzy, intimate songs that wouldn't be out of place in a smoky night club or a cozy, snowy winter evening. I love almost every track on this album. From the songwriting to the instrumentals, this album is great. This album is in many ways a precursor to Laufey and definitely worth checking out for anyone who is a fan of jazzy sounds applied to a pop setting.

I Ain't Marching Anymore
•••
Phil Ochs, second only to Bob Dylan in the early 60s folk scene, had a real talent for writing protest songs that force listeners to think about the world they lived in. His songs on this album, released in 1965, cover topics from the Vietnam War to racial injustice, to other problems affecting the American people at the time. His lyrics are oozing with imagery and satirical double meanings and are often absolutely genius. This album has many highlights like "Here's to the State of Mississippi", "The Highwaymen", and "I Ain't Marching Anymore."

Tangled Up In Blue is the perfect mix between an Irish ballad, American folk music, and a collegiate a cappella team. This album includes bluegrass-inspired re-imaginings of songs by Beyonce, Neil Young, Brandi Carlile, and more! Their satisfying vocal harmonies play perfectly with their instrumentals to create a musically interesting and gratifying listening experience. This album is a family backyard singalong, grab whatever instrument you can play, and have a good time sort of album, packed with energy, good vibes, and amazing vocal performances.

If you need to lock in and get some work done, this is my suggestion for your go-to study album. Jon Batiste takes a collection of Beethoven's best works and reimagines them for a jazzy night club. This album is relaxing and interesting, great to put on in the background while still being packed with unique and ear-catching ideas. An amazing showcase of Batiste's unique voice and skill with the piano.

Gotta be the best lyrics on a Dylan album, Mr Tambourine Man has some of the most vivid imagery in music, Love Minus Zero is Dylan’s second best love song, and the last two songs on the album have to be two of Dylan’s best lyrical outputs. This is such a happy medium between Dylan’s later, more introspective, narrative-focused songs and his earlier protest stuff.

Josh Ritter's ability to tell stories and make statements about the world through thought provoking, captivating, and darn catchy lyrics is unmatched by any other lyricist since Bob Dylan. He is truly the greatest lyricist of the 21st century. This album is his best since Beast in its Tracks, and goes to amazing musical extremes. Truth is a Dimension (Both Invisible and Blinding) explores what truth is and how it is used in our modern society while still having a strong narrative throughline and is one of his best songs ever. (Also Josh's girlfriend gets stolen by Neil DeGrasse Tyson which is funny.)
