Rostam
•••
Just saw Rostam live tonight. What a wonderful experience. He was so loose and sincere on stage while simultaneously so rigorous and attuned to the composition of the music. It was so magical to see him open and allow himself to be fully effected by the music too. His new album (American Stories) makes me tear up and feel free. The songs from his album, Half Light, make me feel like I’m moving through every single subtle change of the light through the day. The compositions feel euphoric and otherworldly but also make me feel grounded in this insane experience that is being a human.

Joseph Cornell
•••
Joseph Cornell is up there for one of the first artists I fell in love with and whose name never left my mind. I first saw his shadow boxes when I was 15 years old working a summer job as an art + family education intern at the Art Institute of Chicago. That job probably changed my entire life! His work was so magical, and melancholy. I was so amused and captivated by his way of arranging these little worlds that felt like keys to different tiny worlds inside myself that I had sensed but couldn't open. Someone once said that the real art is how we are changed by a piece, what stays with us and how that changes how we interact with others. Joseph Cornell showed me that we can always find magic through intentional arrangement, we can always see a new story if we look a little more gently + closer.

Kelly Sinnapah Mary
•••
Kelly Sinnapah Mary makes work that doesn't just transport you...she creates work that makes you see everything that is happening around us that we can't always see with our simple unmagicked plebeian eyes. Sinnapah Mary is "Afro-Caribbean but later discovered that she is a descendant of indentured workers from the South Indian state Tamil Nadu, who were brought to the Caribbean following the abolition of slavery to replace enslaved labor". I've never seen work from someone who held these identities that are often not part of the dominant narrative and oversimplified when we think about race/ethnicity. I just love the richness of the colors, the myth and magic, her worldbuilding + storytelling, and the haunting eyes of her paintings

Oh you know magic yes you do. "There has been an apparent thread in my art that weaves from early prints of the 1960's through later collages and assemblages and ties into the current installations. That thread is a curiosity about the mystical. I am intrigued with combining the remnant of memories, fragments of relics and ordinary objects, with the components of technology. It's a way of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge. Curiosity about the unknown has no boundaries. Symbols, images, place and cultures merge. time slips away. The stars, the cards, the mystic vigil may hold the answers. By shifting the point of view an inner spirit is released. Free to create" Betye Saar 1998

Marigold Santos

Marigold Santos just gets it. I love the way she draws across folk stories, the natural world, myth, and time (past, present, future) in all her work. You can see it not just in the symbolism she uses, but also in the textures of her work and the abstraction of her figures!
