If you want to meet artists, see work in progress, learn a bit about what you do and don’t like, go to artists’ open studios. I’m linking to Yale’s only because theirs was where I first picked up this habit when I was fresh out of undergrad and working in exhibitions. Schools host them, buildings that house lots of studios do, individual artists do! So many options and so much to discover.

When I lived in Brooklyn I kept a photo album of every Paul Richard drip portrait I found on the sidewalk. It was a comforting habit I had. Now we have one of his portraits in our kitchen and it makes me feel connected to that time.

Walker Art Center YouTube Channel

The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN) has a history of hosting fantastic speaker series, my favorite being the Insights Design Lecture Series. They are a joy to attend in-person if that’s available to you, but the true gift here is that they have a comprehensive archive of the past 40 years (!) on their YouTube channel. Some incredibly influential creatives have been a part, and you can pull them up at the tap of a finger.
