Black sesame cake from Yang’s
•••
This cake is like a black sesame sticky toffee pudding. So moist, nutty, and decadent.

Pavlova
•••
It’s really been having its moment these past few years, but this one from Cafe Bolita in Berkeley was special. It had a nuttier, almost caramel-like flavor from the mesquite that was just too good.

Chocolate cream pie from Quarter Sheets
$15
•••
A rich and saltier chocolate than other choco cream pies I’ve had. I just think Quarter Sheets has their desserts down.

Artichoke from Bar Panisse
•••
You’ve heard of Chez Panisse, you know Cafe Panisse, but Bar Panisse is where it’s at. Love artichoke.

Princess Cake from Quarter Sheets
•••
This is the most recent cake I’ve had, my first princess cake of hopefully many more to come. The cream is abundant, but lightly sweetened with most of the flavor coming from the tart raspberry layers and the marzipan. An exquisitely soft and fluffy cake.

Oatmeal Special from Lula Cafe
•••
People might not bat an eye when oatmeal is listed as a special, but I’m a Porridge Person. This oatmeal was creamy and hearty with the mix of grains and chantilly cream. The dried cantaloupe was surprisingly juicy and offered a delightful change in texture with the nuts and seeds in the mix.

When Sally Met Sally
•••
Started by Jessica Koslow, Sqirl is a spot I always think about when I’m away and thinking of home. Probably famous for their ricotta toast, they do everything well, but my go-to order has shifted from the Salmon Sorrel bowl to the When Sally Met Sally. The earthiness of the beet-cured salmon, the saltiness of the roe, house pickles, and the nuttiness of the rügbrod is refreshing and filling. Can’t wait to go for dinner service.
