The idiot by elif batuman

So deeply funny, while also bringing you back to the bewildering experience of learning everything in real-time as an early adult. A lot to chew on about language, culture, and how we make meaning — plus a laugh on every page

Tom’s Crossing by Mark Z. Danielewski
•••
An epic western that tells the story of two brave teens trying to save a pair of horses set for slaughter, while also telling the story of the countless retellings and interpretations and artistic renderings of that story. Walking alongside these characters and joining the cacophony of their audience is a thrilling and moving experience. It has also turned me into a horse girl. I highly recommend this once in a lifetime book.

The last samurai by helen de witt
•••
A brilliant and challenging novel that reflects upon language, genius, art, and fathers. Apparently this book fell out of print for a while due to some conflict w the publisher, which only adds to its mystique. You get the sense that De Witt was uncompromising - as evidenced by lengthy sections in ancient greek - but it’s worth it in the end. Plot is kind of like if Mamma Mia were dead serious. Oh and this is unrelated to the tom cruise movie.

I found this book to be delightfully smart. It’s a satirical fantasy about a phd student in analytical magick that must travel through hell to retrieve her advisor. Drags in some of the inner circles (of hell) but overall brilliant.

One of my favorite graphic novels; an artful psychedelic thriller as gripping as it is beautifully rendered.

Very nostalgic upper west side tale of a year in a boys life - navigating prep school, being a child actor, and growing up alongside nefarious adults - with beautiful prose. A favorite of this year for me so far.
