“I’m proud of you”
•••
I always feel weird saying this because I worry it will sound somehow condescending but frankly it always goes over well!!! I think it’s nice to be proud of the people you love!!! It’s not that you think you’re better than them, it’s more of a vicarious feeling, like their successes are your successes and their happiness is your happiness. Also it can be very hard to be proud of ourselves. Sometimes we need someone else to do it for us. Okay monthly(?) corny rec complete 🫡

Saying “stay cool”
•••
Really fun way to remind everyone that you’re all in the same terrible microclimate together. I like to say it to strangers/acquaintances during a heat wave. There’s something dad about it, but also something West Side Story. It’s also not cool at all, which is Alanis-Morissette-Ironic

Calling it the “farmy marky”
•••
I am not exactly proud of my tendency for cutesy language, but at this point I’ve embraced it. Sunday morning farmy marky is my favorite thing even though I literally always crash the next day. But at least I have my zucchini, even if I’m too tired to cook it. Thank you @JV for emboldening me with your shaow shaow rec. (Tomatoes are Halal Pastures at the Park Slope farmy marky)

Imbricate
•••
Stumbled upon this word in an academic article about Dracula (why not) (fyi it’s about “reverse colonization” fears in Dracula, by Stephen D. Arata, v interesting), but anyway, I gasped when I saw it. At this stage in my life a new word is so delicious to me. Imbricate!!! That’s so sexy!!! It’s kind of what it sounds like, but Arata uses it figuratively. Ie he says Stoker “imbricate[s] Gothic fantasy and contemporary politics” in Dracula. Fun! Idk is this insufferable?

“- ai”
•••
I always type “-ai” when I google, which stops it from listing ai results. It’s super automatic now. But idk if that really works; for all I know it’s still generating them and not showing them to me? I would love a different search engine.

the em dash
•••
Inspired by @AMB to elegize the em dash!! Beloved punctuation of my good friend Emily Dickinson. It’s heavily associated with AI now, which I find offensive, because I’ve been using the em dash for forever. Time for the poets to reclaim it from the robots :)

Why does she say it like that? She’s from New York. It haunts me.

Oxford English Dictionary
•••
Did you know you can log into the Oxford English Dictionary with your library card? There is no better reference. It’s really good for classic books, because it doesn’t just give you the modern definition of the word. And if you’re wondering about the first usage of a word (like my dad was with “vamp”), you can just look it up! I literally love to learn.
