Information - MoMA
•••
In 1970, the Museum of Modern Art opened their groundbreaking Information show, a survey of conceptual art addressing burgeoning technologies, data and surveillance, and social and political systems. Documentation and visitor interaction were paramount to the show. Numerous artists performed actions that were later transformed into data, either textual, numerical, or photographic (often in the form of photo sequences). Other artists offered visitors instructions, such as Hans Haacke's Poll of MoMA Visitors which asked participants whether or not they would vote for a candidate who had not denounced the Vietnam War. The full catalog of the show was recently re-released, containing documentation of the works and accompanying artist statements. The collection is so stimulating to scroll through, and many of the approaches taken still feel fresh and relevant from a contemporary perspective.

Philosophy (Randomized)
•••
Sometimes when I need inspiration beyond what is immediately tangible, I go to the "random entry" button on the Stanford philosophy archive. It often recommends me abstract ideas that allow me to think about my life, interests, and politics with a greater depth. One of the most compelling entries I've stumbled upon that prompted a number of my works was panpsychism: the theory that consciousness, experience, and life force is a fundamental characteristic of everything - animate and inanimate - on the planet. If such a belief were unanimously held, how would the way we conduct ourselves as a society change? Lots of interesting things to think about.

Seeing - Annie Dillard
•••
"The vision comes and goes, mostly goes, but I live for it, for the moment when the mountains open and a new light roars in spate through the crack, and the mountains slam." Oh, to experience the world as Annie Dillard does! Seeing is one of the most beautiful reminders of how fully the earth brims with wonder and curiosity, if only we may open our eyes to see it. Doing so is not always simple - requiring a patience to wait for the right conditions, knowledge of what to look for, and the drive to seek out new experiences - but the thrill of a long-awaited sight is worth all the effort. I recurrently stumble across this work once or twice a year, and it always inspires me to approach mundanity in a new light. Anything I have experienced once before, or a thousand times before, can still offer me value, so long as I am receptive and observant enough to receive it.
