Antique Hardware
•••
Functionality, form, design. Hardware. Find it in an antique store, on the side of the road, or in the scrapyard. Use it to create your own machinery (you = technologically savvy) or transform it into your own sculptural object. Don't forget: it came from somewhere. A doorknob transformed still retains the fact that once, it was a doorknob. A lock transformed still retains the fact that once, it was a lock. Opening, closing. Access, restriction. An object's history never fully disappears. Use that to your advantage.

Street Finds
•••
When I first moved to New York City, I was astounded by the volume of objects littered across the sidewalks, discarded by one and awaiting retrieval by another. Such a system seems more circular than most, giving the item one last chance to reach redemption. Though, what percentage of objects actually make it into a new home, I'm not sure. I know that I, however, have picked up countless assortments of things off the streets to carry home - vases, chandeliers, tables, shelves, paintings, and other decor items (as well as two discarded bike tires and a vacuum). After cultivating this habit for a few years, I returned home to Georgia to find a heap of broken furniture legs on the side of a neighborhood road. I collected them, thrilled, and ended up creating two podium-like sculptures out of them, hardly spending a penny.

1. Open Google Maps 2. Search for landfills or scrap yards nearby. 3. Pick one; call the listed phone number. 4. Speak to Mike. 5. Inquire if you can come collect metal parts. (The answer is yes, but only if you come within 30 minutes, get your shoes on and go!) 6. Walk into the industrial part of town. (Just a few blocks down the road.) 7. Ask for Mike. 8. Be introduced to Edgar, who will give you gloves and help you collect loose metal fragments. (He will also ask you if you know who Jesus is. Don't forget to be struck by his kindness.) 9. Offer to pay for your collection. 10. Be told that it is free. 11. Return home successfully. 12. Use the materials however you see fit.
