initiate community activities for the office!

I’ve been bringing fun to work for a little over a year now, and it’s been a great way to shake up the monotony of the daily grind and also spread some joy to your coworkers! I put together a “free little library” in the office on an empty bookshelf in a reservable meeting space, started putting out a rotation of community puzzles in the back of the office, and I work with some other coworkers to plan a few lowkey after work happy hours or lunch-time events in the conference room. We also hold bake-offs from time to time and run a couple themed month-long campaigns where everyone in the office gets a little treat by the end (i.e. Halloween = coworkers take turns leaving candy on each others desks throughout the month of October until everyone has received some). Don’t be afraid to get silly with it! With permission from the powers that be, of course.

My long distance friends and I use this as a way to keep up with each other in a fun and meaningful way when our varying schedules, time zone differences, and daily life commitments don’t always allow us to hop on a video call or be in the group chat at the same time. It’s very customizable to fit your preferences, has a ton of questions to choose from (or allows you to write your own), and incudes other fun features like adding photos and music suggestions.

invite friends over to celebrate them and do something they loved!

Last year on the 6th anniversary of my sister’s death, I invited my friends over to watch one of her favorite movies (National Treasure, she had great taste) and indulge in her favorite foods, snacks, and beverages. It was actually a really great night while still holding space for the sadness. It transformed what is always a very heavy day into one where I could smile and laugh and remember her in a sweet way with a community of people who wanted to support me.
