Phase Shift by Angela Lane
•••
hands down my favorite living painter - this is astonishing in person. not only does the brushwork defy all attempts to understand its construction (recalling, for me, raffaele monti's veiled vestal virgin), she's also working with afterimages in such a way that staring at the sun creates a blue light that dances around it, like solar flares on the chromosphere.

The kinds of painting I can stare at for hours, a world I want to walk right into. This one in particular keeps me from falling victim to the shifting baseline syndrome--this is how many birds there should be, and will be again. The details on the frame are not to be overlooked.

The Portrait of a Tree in a Jharokha III by Manjot Kaur
•••
No kings but trees! "The concept of work takes reference from existing Indian Mughal miniatures paintings, in which portraits of kings and princes are depicted in architectural settings. I replaces the image of a ruler in Jharokha with a tree. Here, the tree becomes the protagonist acknowledging the plant intelligence and giving voice to the plants. To cultivate the ability to envision flora as regal figures, this work seeks to champion the idea of granting personhood to the botanical world, challenging the prevailing patriarchal attitude towards ecology. This painting reflects on the interconnectedness of nature and humanity, to subvert the traditional attitudes that marginalize the significance of ecological balance. What kind of world would we inhabit if trees were the rulers and kings?"

Destined by Megan Gabrielle Harris

I just love the way the landscape seems to rush toward the center and then through the valley into the horizon, while the tree branches framing the top give it a storybook feel.

Orbit of Pluto by Charles Ross

This is one of his smaller pieces. His conceptual rigor is stunning. I got to visit Star Axis on my honeymoon and am still gobsmacked every time I think about it. There is no one else on Earth making art like Charles Ross.
