Morning Lovingkindness Walks
•••
I like to do this on my morning dog walks, and it can really shift the tone of my day. It leaves me feeling more connected and kinder to myself throughout the day. I start by silently offering some wishes of well-being toward my dog (this comes most easily!), then I offer them to myself, and to people I pass. Typical phrases include things like "may you be happy, may you be healthy, may you be peaceful and safe", but you can also adjust them and make your own. This builds on a formal Metta or Lovingkindness sitting meditation practice that I have done on and off for many years (Sharon Salzberg and Tara Brach are two of my favorite teachers), and I got the idea from a podcast interview with Sharon Salzberg. It may helpful to try the sitting practice once or twice to get a sense of it (links above), and track 13 of this audiobook has a good guide to the walking version.

One to two sessions with a really great physical therapist
•••
After a bad few months of neck pain and a not-so-great encounter with a perfectly nice but young and inexperienced PT that I found through insurance, I went out of network and found someone amazing who specializes in neck and spine issues. I'm sure there are great people out there in-network, but in my case using FSA/HSA funds for one or two sessions with someone really experienced was so worth it. I got so much information about the causes of my neck and back pain, lifestyle changes that could help, and a good mix of exercises to do on my own going forward. Now I go back and see her about once her twice a year and it's so nice to know it's an option when something flares up.

Making your own palette
•••
This has been one the most fun parts of teaching myself to watercolor. If starting over, I would skip the student grade paint and just get a few small tubes to start with. Susan Chiang's blog has some good advice for beginners! I bought a few cheap palettes to try different combos and paint brands, though you really only need a few basic colors. Now I have a larger one I keep on my desk and small palette I take when I travel.
