Low-dose naltrexone
•••
My nomination for most unsung little anti-inflammatory without all the awful side effects of NSAIDs (I used to eat advil like candy): low-dose naltrexone, ak Naltrexone has been around forever, but in very low doses it’s used off-label for its anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects, for a surprisingly enormous range of conditions. The evidence is stronger for some uses than others, but it’s inexpensive, generally well tolerated, and one of those generic drugs that makes you wonder why more people haven’t heard of it. I’m on it for endometriosis pain. Our integrative vet has both of our dogs on LDN as part of their cancer-prevention/wellness regimen, and it also potentially does double duty for some of their other health issues. They’ve had zero problems with it. Our pet insurance even covers it because our vet found research supporting its use for one of their existing conditions. If you enjoy going down an off-label-medication rabbit hole as much as I do, the LDN Research Trust has a frankly wild list of conditions for which LDN is being used or studied. And Joe Graedon recently wrote about LDN for The People’s Pharmacy, which is a great place to start.

A better alternative to dog steps and ramps
•••
Every dog we’ve loved has refused to use dog steps and ramps. They are usually wobbly, a pain in the butt to operate, and take up a lot of extra space. The woman on Etsy who decided to make what she needed is a genius. Pro tip: get in the habit of using assistive props like this before your dog needs them. Dogs are not exempt from repetitive stress injuries. UPS and police forces research and implement OT solutions to decrease risk of workers comp claims when their employees are constantly getting in and out of cars; it makes sense to me our dogs can definitely benefit from a similar risk management mindset. Related: if you have the same issue inside your house and/or are allergic to ugly pet furniture, do what we do! We have ottomans and daybeds EVERYwhere in our house for the dogs. They’re like a shorter “step” that makes it easier to get up on sofas and beds.

Get Trupanion for your companion animal, even if they are senior
•••
But really whatever pet insurance you choose will be better than nothing. If I could only give one rec in this life, this is the one. I’ve put it off because the issue is so central to our family and feels high stakes. I have much to say but must put it succinctly and get it right. So this is a placeholder for now! I will say I wish Trupanion did human insurance; we are legit envious of the medical care it opens up for our dogs (we are 4 dogs deep now, 2 in this realm and two in The Beyond). Plus it’s a great company (based in Seattle) with outstanding customer service. I once called with questions about claims on Christmas Eve at 8pm and they were so patient and kind x

Record voice memos of your dog’s sleep-breathing
•••
Bonus points for snores! There is no more perfect sound on earth. You can record as many as you want, but make sure to also just listen to your dog breathing without recording. I listen to my dog Molly’s breath-recordings on days when I really miss her. I’m sad I never did this with our first dog, Ben. Can also be helpful for data (ideal breathing rate during sleep is below 34 breaths per minute; if higher, tell your vet)
