Manoj Dias for meditation
•••
The most soothing voice which is of top priority for me when listening to a guided meditation. I distract easily but I can stay pretty present when listening to Manoj D!

Open app
•••
I had forgotten about this app, originally brought to my desk by @Tami years ago, but boy is it good. My doc reminded me that I should try and find 15 minutes of some sort of meditation (walking without headphones etc) and I did on of Manoj D’s mediations while I waited for a home service appointment and I feel so relaxed. I like this app because it has yoga/pilates/movement videos too!

ADHD + Working Memory
•••
Trying to share awareness and understanding the way ADHD minds work. Working memory is a huge one and an area that I certainly have a huge deficit. Constantly setting reminders and lists to help jog my Memory. If I don’t write it down, it didn’t happen, and then I have to also make sure I write it down correctly in the first place! I have started asking clients if I can record our meetings that way I can go back and see if I missed anything.

Putting it all in your Digital Calendar
•••
Given my love for physical media I wish I was a girl who could keep a physical calendar without misplacing it or forgetting to have it on me when I need it. Unfortunately that phone is always on me so I have a better shot of getting an event in my phone’s calendar than I ever would a paper one. I have quite an imperfect record still of entering dates wrong which is not ideal as a freelancer 😬 but this is the best system my ADHD brain can handle. Google Calendar and the reminders app is what keeps me afloat!

Hammer at the Stone
•••
When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that last blow that did it, but all that had gone before. Jacob A. Riis I heard this quote in either a book or film (can’t remember) but it’s stuck with me while I work on this massive undertaking of parting with over 15+ years of prop collecting for work. I’ve been grinding daily and putting in the work, but it’s a many miles to go before I sleep situation… it’s a good reminder that you may not see results right away but that consistency is what will eventually get you there

Understanding Executive Functioning
•••
I feel like a lot of Executive Funtioning deficits get dismissed as character flaws like laziness or incompetence or just swept under ADHD. If I could wave a magic wand and fix these areas that I lack, I would. I’m always trying to come up with systems to help my weak Executive Functioning processes (working memory, order-of-operations, problem-solving). It’s why I’m happy to be the number 3 in command as opposed to 1 or 2 lol.

“Eat the Frog” from now on, “Greet the Frog”
•••
I have to repeat this mantra in the mornings as a pep talk to myself to do the thing I want to do the least, first. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a rebrand of this phrase like I saw someone do with “Feed two birds, with one scone” (love). This does help me feel good on days when my brain is extra scattered to get the worst thing over with and then miraculously the day feels doable after that.

Portable Chargers with option to plug directly into a wall
•••
Boy do I love these! I like to have multiple charging at all times because I’m perpetually running on a low battery and having one of these I can grab and throw in a bag helps me tremendously.

Reminder App
•••
I have found this to be particularly helpful for my brain. I always buy physical planners and notepads but inevitably I just lose them or lose interest in them. Using this very simple app and checking/adding to it daily has really helped. This plus putting screen limits on my phone (Screen Zen has been the best one yet) have unlocked something for my brain!

"Because of who I am as a person"
•••
Not trying to be defeatist but at 42 I know thyself and all the challenges of living an unmedicated life with ADHD. The simplest tasks can be so hard and I figure we live in the age of information so if someone isn’t willing to accept your neurodivergence, then that’s on them. But I love the “because of who I am as a person”. I say this frequently when I explain that if I don’t write it down, it didn’t happen because I have zero short term memory recall…

Spite Mark Zuckerberg with ScreenZen

I regret to report that this might be more helpful than bricking your phone. I’ve had a big house organization project I’ve been trying to tackle while my child is at sleep away camp so I’ve had to employ this to stay on task. It really works.
