USB Rechargeable Book Light
•••
This book light is fabulous! Super compact, a long-lasting battery, 5 brightness settings, and an amber light mode (better for your eyes at night). My kids got them in their Christmas stockings, and they were so nice, I had to get one for myself!

Organizations that work to prevent sexual assault and support survivors
•••
I wish this was not something we needed in this world. But we do. And these organizations are so important to help us move toward change on a societal level.

Make an ancestors' altar
•••
I did this a couple of years ago and found it to be a really beautiful and powerful way to remember, honor, and connect with my family and friends on the other side. It also sparked conversations with my kids about our family history. I now set one up every year toward the end of October.

Bridal Pink paint by Benjamin Moore
•••
My parents' good friend was a house painter and artist, and she swore by this color. It looks almost white in daylight, but at night it takes on a warm, cozy hue. We used it for our living and dining rooms, and I love it. It keeps the space warm without being overpowering.

Alone, a poem by Jack Gilbert

I think about this poem all the time. There are some souls we are always meant to know.

Unsubscribing
•••
I've been on a kick unsubscribing from all the junk - emails, catalogs, spam texts. And it feels so good to exercise some level of control over what gets my attention. Highly recommended!

Little Free Libraries
•••
I can't believe it took us so long to come up with this, but I'm so glad that someone finally did! Who doesn't get excited to stumble upon a little, magical box full of books that are there for the taking? Leave a book, take a book, spread the joy of reading and learning!

Morning Pages
•••
Morning pages has changed my life. You can learn more in Julia Cameron's book The Artist's Way. But the assignment is simple - every day (ideally in the morning) write 3 stream-of-consciousness pages about whatever the eff is in your head. No pressure, just start writing. You will be amazed at what comes out. And it will open up brain space for creativity and inspiration. It takes me about 20 minutes, and I usually don't manage to do it every day. But when I do, I thank myself!

Public transportation
•••
Good for the environment, good for traffic congestion, good for community, and affordable! I feel so fortunate to live in a city with extensive and (mostly) reliable public transportation. It makes it less stressful to get around, and an unexpected benefit has been that as my kids are getting older, they can have more independence, too. Thank you to all the foresightful city planners who made this happen!

Flaneuring
•••
I recently learned a new word, and it turns out it's one of my favorite things to do - flaneuring, or walking with no destination other than to explore and discover. It's something I love to do in Washington, DC, where I live. And there's no better way to explore a new place, whether you're a new resident or just visiting. May your summers be full of flaneuring!!
