War and Peace is the ultimate historical fiction set in early 19th century Russia around the time of Napoleon’s invasion. Tolstoy tells the story of three noble families this 1,224 page tome. I often think about the journey of the hero Andrei Bolkonsky from ambitious young man to humble servant of the greater forces in life. He represents an almost unobtainable ideal of love and forgiveness. I didn’t get this book when I checked it off a list in my twenties. It morphed into one of the greatest books ever written in my forties.”
