“If you live on the west coast and you have oak trees in your neighborhood, you’re likely sharing the neighborhood with a couple of scrub jays. These birds are shy, so you might not see them, but once you know their ugly squawk, you’ll realize they’re always around. And they likely know who you are already. They’re super smart and curious and over time, they will come hang out and see what you’re up to. Earn their trust and they’ll eventually eat out of your hand. Scrub jays are good omens for my family. If we see or hear one in a new place, we will change directions to follow their lead. Never disappointed.”

“Seen occasionally. Fearless birds. We used to have one living in our yard—now, only an occasional visitor.”
