“In 1911, Ward bread factories were advertised as the "brightest, whitest, cleanest places in all New York... great snow-white Temples of Industrial Cleanliness." To further reassure consumers, Ward promised that a "physician examines every employee at the Ward Bakeries. Only people in perfect health work there." At Ward, breadmaking was an almost magical process: "Under the watchful care of the bakers the bread seems almost to make itself."”
