The Dark Wizard

“Dean (Potter) is like the Anthony Bourdain of free soloing. SXSW 2026 select, this docuseries is an intrepid attempt to understand the mind of ‘paradigm shattering talent’, a climber who pushed the limits of fear. Stream Ep 1. ‘the death consequence’ on HBO Max now. If you’re still needing more reason, tune in for the 90s dude-bro climbing fashion. Held my breath watching every ascent.”

“I can’t get over this insane HBO doc on climber/base jumper Dean Potter. Having grown up in a family of athletes and adrenaline junkies I have a particular penchant for this type of extreme sports content. Part of the strange tragedy of this doc is watching the halcyon days of climbing as counterculture vanish. Disturbing, fascinating, man v. himself, man v. world.”

“Never have I ever been more excited for it to be a Tuesday. Highly recommend! “The Dark Wizard is a 2026 four-part HBO Max documentary series exploring the life of Dean Potter, a pioneering, controversial extreme climber, BASE jumper, and highline walker. Directed by Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen (The Alpinist), it covers his, triumphs, inner demons, and rivalry with Alex Honnold.””

“The most intense watch!!!”

“Was in fetal position for a long time after this one. I wrote so much after watching this. I am not sure if I have ever felt the physical response that this series gave me. There are parts of my brain that love toying with the idea of being an extremist. Placed on top of this building curiosity of why I am here? and when will I go? Woof”

“i kind of have an obsession with documentaries - especially on subjects that i know near nothing about. deep dive on the human condition, what happens when you’re constantly chasing “greatness”, living on the fringes of mortality & also reincarnation??”

“The HBO series “The Dark Wizard” is about the life of Dean Potter, a rock climber who also saw himself as a performance artist of sorts. That rings true as you watch him seek and struggle with the outer reaches of human emotional and physical experiences. The first couple episodes left me laughing, the latter two, totally wrecked. 100% recommend (especially as an antidote to everything AI).”

“The level of drive and determination that is shown in this documentary is fascinating. I don’t have whatever it is they have. It’s fascinating to watch play out on screen. Also, the footage is insane.”

“My girlfriend couldn’t tamp down her anxiety without googling for spoilers. I mean, you can tell from the first act that it’s not going to end well. For those that like to watch extreme sports from the comfort of their pajamas… be warned… there’s a lot of machismo. Come for the death defying feats and Alex Honnold’s shady criticism.”

“Does it need to be this many episodes? I don’t know but I didn’t mind or notice bc this was such a thorough, incisive study of one person’s life and decisions. It’s still on my mind.”

“Insane four-part profile on Dean Potter, the mountain climber. A great look at his life and his legacy in the sport.”

“Blew threw all four episodes on a flight this week. Dean Potter was a complicated genius (aren't they all?) and I found myself compelled into his orbit through a tiny screen on an airplane - can't imagine what it would have been like to be around him in person. Was sweaty and had heart palpitations for most of it, could not believe what I was seeing - excellent docu series, can't recommend enough.”

“Got my mom and grandpa binging it at 9am over coffee cause they couldn't wait until evening time. I think it's very important to consume content from other worlds/sports/lifestyles that are different than yours. Taking a seat of curiosity and knowing that every human is entitled to a journey that is entirely their own... including yours.”
