“B&C Rating: 6.7
Rick's is an Eastside Establishment. The food is a mix of diner classics and Mexican classics (very LA) and they're open til midnight. The drive-thru is fun, and the inside is a mix of Dodgermania memorabilia and those perfect patent leather counter barstools that aren't really comfortable but usually guarantee mediocre coffee and great fried food. Also, if you've ever driven past you may have noticed their iconic marquee sign which displays anything from local artist's album releases to happy birthday wishes and engagements.
The Rick's B&C is a great solution for when you're in a pinch. I would highly recommend eating there as this is a B&C that does not travel well. The flavor on this one is there. These beans are definitely lard-based but they rank well on the meaty bean scale and don't overpower the burrito. Rick's also does a good job on the bean to cheese ratio however the wrap of the burrito is not consistent and makes for a messy eating experience.
When we went they gave us a mild red salsa (think Pace-style with less chunks) which is pretty much bottom of the barrel for me. I prefer a medium spice green salsa when eating B&C's as the acidity of the lime and tomatillo really balance out the richness of the fat and carbs you're eating. Similar to how high quality tempura will be served with shiso and grated daikon at a good Japanese restaurant. Gotta cut that fat.”
