“A harrowing novel which begins in an Oakland kitchen, as two estranged siblings try to find common ground after their mother's death. Inside a refrigerator is a black cake--a decades old family recipe--and recordings of their mother, describing to her progeny a life they were completely unaware of. I really enjoyed this one and, back when I read it, I had a bit of a hat trick of reading 3 winning novels in a row: Black Cake, Remarkably Bright Creatures, and Lessons in Chemistry. And after you read Black Cake, you can watch the TV adaptation on Hulu now!”

“Purposely made no plans after work today so I could finish this. A profound and layered story of family, identity, migration, and what it means to be truly known. Gripping and moving from front to back, I read it in two days and now I want black cake.Thank you, @Anja Tyson !”
