Black Cake: Charmaine Wilkerson

Louise Buckley

“Purposely made no plans after work today so I could finish this. A profound and layered story of family, identity, migration, and what it means to be truly known. Gripping and moving from front to back, I read it in two days and now I want black cake.Thank you, @Anja Tyson !”

Spines, Flicks, and Wax

“A harrowing novel which begins in an Oakland kitchen, as two estranged siblings try to find common ground after their mother's death. Inside a refrigerator is a black cake--a decades old family recipe--and recordings of their mother, describing to her progeny a life they were completely unaware of. I really enjoyed this one and, back when I read it, I had a bit of a hat trick of reading 3 winning”
