“Overnight, the world changes, and a woman finds herself alone on a rural farm, with only a cat, a dog, and a cow for company. What does it take, and what does it mean, to survive? What remains when all old ties and habits go? When words themselves no longer matter? Because of how the story is structured, the reader starts at the end, with the narrator's memories and plainspoken acknowledgement that the dog has died, but it is only over the course of the book that the perhaps unbearable depth of what has happened is made plain. Brilliant and shattering.”

“A woman, alone in the woods, only animals and herself to take care of, and no one to observe her.”
