Starstruck

“We all say that miscommunication in fiction, whether it be in fic or in romantic comedies, never seems to hit quite right, but Starstruck gets it. Jessie hooks up with a guy on New Year's Eve that ends up being a famous film actor, and things...well, they get messy. For a lot of reasons.  Each episode is only 22 minutes long and there are only 6 episodes, so it's easily digestible, and the final episode of s1 is this perfect snapshot of life in your late 20s when nothing seems to go the way you planned it. The glimpses that we get of Tom, Jessie's love interest, are kind of mournful and yearning, and like. Pitch perfect to the messy thing between them that they've only defined in brief moments together.  "It's like fanfiction," someone says to Jessie in one episode. Yes, but no one seems to be able to say the right thing quite yet, a clear sign we've got a ways to go. The end of s1 ends on an open note as Jessie considers leaving London to move home.”

“this British rom com limited series is so smart and delightful. tldr: boy and girl hookup at a nye party. girl finds out boy is a famous movie star and doesn’t want any part of it. ensue boy pining after girl and a little vice versa! created by and starring the wonderfully charming New Zealand comedian Rose Matefeo. each episode is a season i.e. fall, summer, winter etc. so you follow the characters over a good chunk of time but the episodes are only 20 mins. basically an extended rom com plus it’s British so it checks all the boxes. available on hbo!”

“everything i want in a romcom. i made everyone i know watch it. extremely charming and endearing! plus actually funny!”

“A pleasant little gem of a show featuring winning leads and an excellent New Zealand accent. Thanks to @Cally for introducing me to it”

“Jessie, played by Kiwi treasure Rose Matafeo, is one of the greatest characters ever — in a show whose rom-com trope is a normie and a celebrity falling for each other, you immediately see the appeal of Jessie-the-normie, and it takes longer for Tom-the-celeb to grow on you. To know Jessie is to love Jessie. Of course, it does help that this is one of the two shows in this genre smart enough to cast Extreme Hottie Nikesh Patel as the male lead. The chemistry is delicious!”

“I’m an unwavering fan of a perfect three season arc. You can tell a perfect story, filled with character development, world building and nuance. Starstruck is a shining example of that and a show that made me endlessly happy. Rose Matafeo is a gem.”

“my answer to what should i watch next 99 percent of the time”

“Rose Matafeo is a JOY! See also both her HBO specials.”

“Love Rose Matafeo so much! This tv show is a gem.”

“Rose Matafeo is funny, relatable, and weird in allllllll the good ways.”

“If we’ve hung out more than twice, I’ve told you about Starstruck”

“I did not know who Rose Matafeo was before I watched this show but I can’t wait to see more shows with her in it. The story is relatable, it’s funnny, and romantic. Nikesh Patel is the male lead here and it is perfectly casted.”
