“An exemplar of my new favorite entertainment genre 'Colonial Schadenfreude'. A delightful chronicle of the brits cracking under pressure in 1800s India. J.G. Farrell captures the interiority of the besieged characters with a wit that oscillates between ruthlessness and humanity- If, like me, you love to read Norman Rush this should be a joy. Plus it was a rec from Adam Curtis' newest video essay 'Shifty', and seconded by my Mom. Can't wait to read the other two novels in his trilogy on colonialism.”
