“on my Summer WRT List!”

“Had so so many feelings after this read - it really moved me in a way that’s been hard to find lately. I love these characters so much!”

“Beautiful writing - 1940's south - motherless daughters and female friendship. Not a crazy tear jerker for those who don't like to cry.”

“Even better than An American Marriage, if that’s even possible!”

“Best book I’ve read in 2026 so far”

“current read. picked this up at the cutest book vending machine (Long Story Books) in Atlanta.”

“Wow. This book. Another book club book. I read this very quickly. I love her writing style. This book is about friendship, racism, and family. It takes place in the civil rights era, and two friends coming of age. Both of their journeys and their attempts of belonging, and finding themselves, exploring identity and secrets. I couldn’t wait to go back and read American marriage her book she wrote before this one…”

“So vivid it felt like I was watching a movie.”

“Intimate, classic, beautiful storytelling”

“Brilliant and real. Captures perfectly the strength and pull of a friendship that is family.”

“Beautiful saga of friendship and womanhood and how both are impacted by race, money, and sexuality.”

“a hauntingly beautiful book on black womanhood in the american south but also about womanhood in general. women who love, women who suffer, women who grieve, women who exist unabashedly. chimamanda adichie and tayari jones are two of my favourite living voices in literature today. highly recommend not just for yourself but also maybe as a birthday present to the woman you love!”

“so good. the ending was a bit abrupt though and left me wanting more.”

“Exquisite prose”
