Fassbender pushes the boundaries of early queer cinema here, urging the audience to wait: to resist judgment that feels too easy to reach. The film is contained but not claustrophobic. The outfits and set design are immaculate. The cinematography is stunning. And above all else the dialogue, story, and performances are breathtaking. One of the best films I’ve seen this year.”
