“A childhood favorite of mine, and maybe the second ever artwork that I have loved! As a toddler, my mother would take me and I would sit here for as long as I could. As an adult, just as striking. If you’re into drama, I’d read about the backstory behind its creation—Darren Waterston did a freaky interpretation of the room and its history in Filthy Lucre (2015) that scared me too much to really appreciate at the time.”

“DC's underground treasure. Housed in the basement of the Freer, this jewel box of a room is the perfect place to spend a rainy hour away from the crowds. It's peaceful and invites contemplation. Each time I go some new aspect of the room catches me flat-footed.”

“On the Third Thursday of the month, they open the shutters which utterly transforms the experience!”
