“"Deep Burnt" by French producer Pépé Bradock (released in 1999 on the EP Burning) is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential deep house tracks of all time. [1, 2]
The Music & Sample
The track is famous for its hypnotic, sweeping string loop. It brilliantly samples the live orchestral intro from Freddie Hubbard's 1971 jazz-fusion track "Little Sunflower” by Hubbard-Back-To-Birdland. Over its massive 11-minute runtime, Bradock layers the loop with warm house kicks, evolving filters, delays, and stereo-panning effects that give the track its signature psychedelic, melting texture.
Vinyl Reissues & Legacy
Originally released on Kif Recordings, the track has become a holy grail for house DJs, prompting several rare, fast-selling vinyl reissues over the years. In 2018, Bradock revisited the track himself by releasing Deep Burnt Edits on his label, Atavisme, featuring two VIP variations: "Surprise!" and "The Surprise Is That There Is No Surprise!".”
