John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge

“I was in Cincinnati over the weekend for the Cincinnati Art Book Fair (excellent) and to get there, I had to cross the Ohio River via a two-lane sky-blue suspension bridge with castle-like supports. As I whizzed by, I noticed a hand-painted sign: John A. Roebling Bridge. The next morning, I went back on foot to check it out more closely and turned up a plaque on the Kentucky side explaining some of its history. Lo and behold, it turns out that that this bridge, built in 1867, was the model for the Brooklyn Bridge, also designed by Roebling. When it opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
