Ghostbuster and Slimer: Three years ago, my older daughter decided her younger sister (then 18 months old) should be Slimer for Halloween. This led to me being a Ghostbuster and the most adorable slimy ghost you could imagine. The best part was that my daughter loved the costume so much that she would pull it out and wear it constantly for the next year and a half.

Edward Scissorhands + neighbors: Honestly, I've made a lot of good Halloween costumes, but this one was legendary. We dressed our then-three-year-old daughter as Edward Scissorhands, while her dad and I were neighbors who got haircuts. He really committed to the bit and shaved a stripe down his head (I used a wig).

My friend was a salad bar!: A friend made it for a party years ago and it was genius.  Built a cardboard salad bar top that fit around his waist with all the fixings,(he cut all the salad bits into bowls and hollowed out the cardboard salad top to fit the bowls) taped a light over the sneeze guard he installed above the bar and even covered his legs in wood grain contact paper. IT WAS THE BEST COSTUME. I even made a delicious salad!

Dobby: Cut the bottom off of my beige laundry bag & tied it just like Dobby’s attire, and crafted ears out of thick paper glued to a headband. Multiple people gave me their socks in various NYC bars and it was a delight.

Ashley Madison: My husband and I were invited to a Halloween party where we only knew the hosts. This was right after the Ashley Madison leak happened. We looked at the Facebook invite for the party and made a list of everyone who had RSVP’d yes. When people asked him what he was he would ask them their full name and pull the list out of his coat pocket and verify if they were on it.

Magic 8 Ball: I’m a Halloween Grinch and haven’t put real effort into dressing up since I was a kid, but this year I was invited to a party and decided to Be A Good Sport. I agonized over finding something recognizable across generations, fun, comfortable to wear, etc, and this costume literally came to me in a dream. My white circle (an old pillow case) has a slot in it for these cards of the exact blue of the mystic fluid of the ball, and I hand wrote all 20 answers on them so I can tell people “Signs Point To Yes” at this party.

My Favorite Halloween Costume: Pierrots!: Black and white everything! Stripes or checks (closet or thrift store finds)! Add a ruffle collar or a tutu 'round the neck! Suspenders! I spray painted a dollar store party hat black. I made the pom poms from yarn and safety pinned them on. My kid wore these pants with stripe-y tights under. I had Harlequin tights and pom poms on my shoes. Black eyeliner + red lipstick for the makeup. 🤡
