An Elegant Puzzle: Systems of Engineering Management by Will Larson

Fundamentals of managing engineering teams. More geared toward manager and director levels, but great for anyone leading a team or aspiring to lead. Plus, excellent graphs for us visual learners! I always say that the toughest part of my career is the people management. The technical is easy, but people are far more nuanced. Managing is rewarding, however it isn’t a passive act. Great managers put in the work and constantly challenge themselves to be better.

Everything you need to get started building agentic applications. Their free tutorials (LangChain Academy) are not bad and can get you up and running in a day on a concept. Great for prototyping, but I’d leap out of the ecosystem to scale. If you are new to building agents, LangSmith/LangChain is a good place to begin.

Best UX (and UI) of any color palette generator. The desktop web app utilizes the space bar to flick through palettes. Opinion: the space bar is the most underutilized yet highly satisfying key in software UX. Avid user since this project was first developed 10+ years ago.

Supabase: The Postgres Development Platform

Supabase is unlike the other quick-start “application” builders in that it hooks you up with a Postgres db and has the ability to handle auth, APIs, and more. I built the second version of an app I’ve rebuilt over and over on Supabase and was impressed with all the capabilities. Plus, it’s an open source project!

The original AI! Adobe Illustrator still stands apart because of the many, many features. I used it to digitize drawings for years. I’m sure there is an AI (non Adobe Illustrator) tool that can do it all, but Illustrator gives you control.

How thousands of engineers have contributed their time and effort to making these tools so elegant and easy to use (long before the assistance of AI). Open source software is a marvel of democratized collaboration, and an example of where we could be as a society if information and the sharing of ideas, the proliferation of knowledge, was truly free and widely available.
