The Spiral Jetty
•••
Tough to choose one piece as I have endless recommendations, but something has always called to me about The Spiral Jetty; its theme, materials, location, and humble presence. I’ve been fortunate to see other Smithson pieces around the world, and I plan to pilgrimage to Utah in my lifetime to visit this one.

Photos don’t do it justice! Walking around this sculpture feels like going inside a movie and walking around a freeze frame.

I don’t know if this is necessarily my favorite painting I’ve ever seen (what a daunting task to pick just one!), but I saw this not too long ago and it stopped me in my tracks.

Years ago I went to see a show of his at a museum. His work is so powerful it moved me to tears. I don’t have one specific painting to recommend, his entire oeuvre is phenomenal.

Things I like to look at
Hélène Vanel from her performance at the International Exhibition of Surrealism in Paris, 1938
•••
I was at the Picasso Museum Barcelona a few years ago and this image stopped me in my tracks. So much so that I now have a tattoo of Helene in this pose on my left arm. I love the idea of her putting on a wig and doing a live performance at the Surrealism Exhibition all the way back in 1938. There's something so punk about how she is part of the still life, grabbing at herself, and the masculine/feminine energy she is exuding. And that stare! From Wikipedia: Hélène Vanel was a dancer, sculptor, and painter affiliated with the Surrealist movement of the 20th century. Not a great deal is known now of Vanel, though she was quite famous during her time.[1]

Experiencing this at 19 just re-wired my brain (and led to huge life changes). Not only was the spectacle of artificially creating natural phenomena absolutely breathtaking, the way it changed the interactions between viewers in real time was profound.

honestly anything by Jacques Louis David is just so incredible to see in real life. The scale of this piece is something you can only understand when you’re standing face to face with it. AI could never. Perhaps not the best character but damn the guy could paint.

Collezione Peggy Guggenheim
•••
A most intimate look into the world and life of Peggy Guggenheim, and her personal collection of Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. Set inside her home at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni in Venice, the collection reflects the artists she championed, many of whom she had close relationships, making the experience deeply personal. Don’t miss: Landscape with Red Spots No. 2 by Wassily Kandinsky, Birth of Liquid Desires by Salvador Dalí, Alchemy by Jackson Pollock, Woman, Moon, Birds by Joan Miró, and The Antipope by Max Ernst—five works that were deeply personal to Peggy, that reflect both her early support of avant-garde artists and the intimate, experimental spirit of her collection. (My favorite museum in the world.)
