'Wasted on Youth' by The Molotovs
•••
Mathew and Issey Cartlidge are siblings from London, playing short sharp guitar songs that run straight back through The Jam and the Small Faces. 'Today's Gonna Be Our Day' is where I'd start.

Truly Gifted Kids: A Book About a Band Called Prefab Sprout
•••
'Truly Gifted Kids: A Book About a Band Called Prefab Sprout' by Nige Tassell, out this month. Four hundred pages on Paddy McAloon, who has spent the last thirteen years writing and recording material that almost nobody has heard. It's part biography, part travelogue. At one point Tassell ends up working as an ad-hoc roadie for Martin McAloon, which tells you the sort of access he had to settle for and the lengths he went to anyway. £25, hardback.

The Future Bites - Steven Wilson
•••
Steven Wilson put the prog on hold and made a sleek electronic pop album about buying things you don't need. 'Personal Shopper' is nine minutes of glacial disco that stops dead so Elton John can read out a shopping list, and by rights it shouldn't work at all. I've had it on regularly since it came out and it still hasn't worn thin.

'Wasted on Youth' by The Molotovs
•••
A recommendation rather than a classic: 'Wasted on Youth' by The Molotovs. Two siblings from London — Mathew and Issey Cartlidge — playing the kind of sharp, three-minute mod-punk that runs straight back through The Jam and the Small Faces, and doing it without a trace of irony about it. It went to number three when it came out in January, which tells you there's still an appetite for this stuff. 'Today's Gonna Be Our Day' is the one that'll get you.

'Trophies for Lovemaking' - The Cobbs
•••
Twenty tracks, originally released back in 1999 under the name Ty Cobb, and one of those records that seems to have passed almost everyone by — it only really resurfaced when it turned up on streaming a few years ago. I've never understood why it isn't better known. 'Wondering' is the one I'd point anyone to first.

This Is the Sea' by The Waterboys.
•••
I'll start with my all-time favourite: 'This Is the Sea' by The Waterboys. Forty minutes of Mike Scott at his best. It's the high-water mark of that 'big music' sound, and I've never got tired of a single second of it. 'The Pan Within' floors me every time I hear it — just perfection.
