0xCal AI Calorie & Macro Tracker
•••
0xCal (0xcal.app) is a calorie and macro tracker for iPhone. You log by photographing the plate, by typing "two fried eggs and toast with butter", or by scanning a barcode. If the estimate's wrong you tell it so and it adjusts, rather than sending you hunting through a database for the right entry. No account to set up, no ads, no social feed. The meal photos aren't kept on their servers and the logs stay on the phone. Subscription through the App Store, with a trial.

Beat free screenwriting app for macOS
•••
Beat (beat-app.fi) is a screenwriting app for Mac and iOS. The desktop version is free — not a trial, not freemium, free, and open source under the GPL. It writes in Fountain, which is plain text, so the screenplay stays a file you own rather than something sealed inside one company's format. It opens and exports Final Draft files too, so you're not cut off from anyone you're working with. Everything stays on your machine. No account, no sync, nothing needing an internet connection. Revision tracking Outline view Drag-to-reorder scenes Given what the industry standard costs, that it exists at all is remarkable.

Mole - Native Mac utility
$19
•••
Also worth a look: Mole (mole.fit). It's a native Mac utility that rolls together the jobs you'd otherwise need four separate apps for — clearing caches with a review step before anything goes - uninstalling apps properly instead of leaving debris scattered around - a treemap of what's actually eating your disk - live CPU, memory and battery readings in the menu bar Nineteen dollars once, covers two Macs, no subscription — which after a decade of everything on the Mac quietly turning into a monthly fee feels almost quaint. It started life as a command-line tool and that version is still free and open source if you'd rather not pay at all.

•••

It's open source, free with no paid tier waiting behind it. Extensions for Chrome and Firefox, a Mac app, plugins for VS Code, Obsidian, Neovim and Zed if that's where you work.
