Not just what you subbed in or swapped, but where, when, and why. I love opening a cookbook and seeing "Book Club Holiday party, 2022. Everyone loved. A+ def make again." My mom just sent me the pic above and wow, I really loved that Banana Nut Bread in 2012.

Stealing this now. I write in all my cookbooks, I confess, I even sneak (very lightly written) notes into library cookbooks with my altitude adjustments (if they worked) and general reactions, and now I’m going to also add where and when notes!

Love this. One of the best gifts I have ever received was a cookbook that @Jun Seo annotated. It was filled with recommendations and insights on how he and his family would use or tweak recipes. The hand writing made it so much more fun.
